UK TRANSPORT INFRASTRUCTURE NEEDS INVESTMENT TO MEET BARKER AND EDDINGTON REVIEW

Sally Low, Head of External Affairs & Policy for the British Chambers of Commerce, said:

"Of course we are disappointed that a government department is failing to meet its targets, especially when UK plc is determined to remain competitive whilst meeting the environmental challenge. This report basically requires everyone, particularly the Government, to take the failings in our transport infrastructure seriously. The BCC's 2006 Transport Survey indicated that the inadequacies of the UK infrastructure costs £17 billion per annum.

This country urgently needs investment in road infrastructure, public transport and better incentives for companies to engage in more sustainable working practices. In the forthcoming spending review there needs to be an acknowledgement of Eddington and Barker, and yes that does cost money."
