1 in 10 entrepreneurs work 14 hours a day

Half of small business owners work more than 60 hours a week, the survey by BT Tradespace found, while almost one in ten put in 100 hours or more – the equivalent of 14 hours a day, every day.

The average amount of time entrepreneurs put into their business was between 50-60 hours a week – that’s 10-20 hours more than a traditional nine-to-five working week.

The results came less than two weeks after another poll found that entrepreneurs intend to be in business for longer than the average marriage. A poll by Barclays Local Business found that business owners plan to run their business for 25 years – a year more than most marriages last.

Jennifer Mowat, director of BT Tradespace, said those who run small and medium-sized enterprises need to work hard to compete.

“It shows the passion, drive and resilience they have,” she said.

“However, smaller companies can achieve better work-life balances by embracing new technology enabling them to do things quicker, more efficiently and more flexibly.

“Their size makes them perfect candidates to adapt, innovate and thrive.”
