Information for Employers on the Diploma
The Department for Children, Schools and Families has launched a new website aimed at employers to increase awareness about the Diploma. The Diploma is a new qualification for young people aged 14-19.
Ultimately, seventeen different Diplomas will be available in subject areas that reflect economic sectors.
The first five Diplomas will be taught in selected schools and colleges in England from this September, these include:
- Engineering
- Creative and Media
- Construction and the Built Environment
- Society, Health and Development
- Information Technology
Employers have been heavily involved in designing the Diploma and the Government sees the award as a key response to the calls that young people are better prepared for work.
The design of the Diploma is distinctive: it’s a portfolio award including academic content related to the sector of study, a high proportion of work-based learning (including work experience), and a requirement for strong basic skills in English, maths and ICT.
The Diploma offers employers an unusual opportunity to get involved with schools and colleges to help shape young people’s learning. For more information, and to see where the first Diplomas are being offered, visit: http://www.dcsf.gov.uk/14-19/employers.
