Tyrrells Potato Chips
Chamber Awards ‘Green Business of the Year’ reveals some of their secrets
Tyrrells Potato Chips, a member of the Herefordshire and Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce, was voted ‘Green Business of the Year’ at last month’s Chamber Awards. Fresh from their recent success, the company agreed to share some of their secrets about going green successfully.
Tyrrells was launched in 2002 as the only potato chip manufacturer to grow its own potatoes and turn them into chips on the same farm. Their range of fifteen flavours of potato chips and iconic vegetable chips, are currently sold to 4,000 outlets across the UK.
One of the company’s major achievements has been embedding a philosophy of environmentalism into the very fabric of their business make up. They have managed to do this without threatening their ability to compete or generate a profit.
Tyrrells pride themselves on contributing to a sustainable environment, and being based on just one farm allows them to carry out a huge number of environmentally friendly projects, such as; maintaining a bore hole as a primary water supply, recycling used sunflower oil for conversion into bio fuel, and planting reed beds to naturally filter waste water from the factory – a living filtration system, which goes back into the soil.
Commenting on their ‘green’ success, Managing Director, Les Sayers said:
"It was always our intention to run a ‘green’ business that could also grow and compete in the wider business world.
"We took a long hard look at what we were producing and pinpointed exactly where going green could help us cut costs and help the environment at the same time. It has been the best thing we ever did!"
